Hello Moore High students,
My name is Jeroen Hummel and I’m one of the International Foreign Exchange Students on Moore High. During the two semesters of 2012/2013, I’m thankful for being a part of Moore High’s spirit! And not to mention, the Junior’s class of 2014!
My home country is the Netherlands, where they speak a whole different language: Dutch. And I’ll promise you, compared with English, it’s a totally other language than you might think it is. The scariest part of being a Foreign Exchange Student is that you’re afraid to be misunderstood, especially in the very begin of this High School Year.
Before I came to the United Stated of America, I already studied some English on my school at home. Well, I’ll tell you that British English is a lot different than American English, especially when you mix it with an accent like the one from Oklahoma…
Things changed quickly. From knowing almost nobody on the first day of school, to everybody know you the second day. I’m not an American, so I look like an alien, my style of clothes is unlike as yours, and of course my accent made me a person in the spotlights. People asked a lot about my culture and were shocked how things were going on at the other side of the globe. Well still there are people calling my name in the hallways, but I apologize, sometimes I know you from you face, but honestly I can’t remember y’alls name…
To be a Foreign Exchange Student is pretty awesome! Every moment of the day is an adventure, with new experiences and you learn a lot more than just follow lessons in you native language. Schools are different, everywhere you go, and what makes the American High School popular by International Students is, that the hospitality is gigantic! My time in the States was amazing and you made a part of it!
Now the time comes that I almost go back to my country, I realize what a great personality Oklahoman people can provide to people like me. Thank you all for this school year, I really enjoyed my stay on the campus. I made friends for live and found an own place in my “second home”.
